A History of Service

Panel Upgrade Expertsts Electrical Contractors, Inc. is the brainchild of Lawrence Baumlin, a former Naval Submariner and Master Electrician with more than 35 years experience. Lawrence is the son of noted geneologist, Mimzi Skinner and John "Big Jack" Baumlin. Electricity runs in the blood in his family. His father, Big Jack, was a Korean War veteran and a distinguished I.B.E.W. electrician for the remainder of his career. After many years of working as a key supervisor on many highway projects, Lawrence was aided by Big Jack and Mimzi with the establishment of Southern Lights with the dream of creating a legacy of service and professionalism in the Electrical trade. Since that time, Southern Lights has made the move from doing residential jobs, to county work, to sub contracting on major asset management jobs, to currently contracting directly with the State of Florida on Highway Lighting maintenance jobs. Lawrence holds Master Electrican Licenses in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Virginia and South Carolina. His vision is to contract with DOT for the entire Southeast of the United States.
Much has already been accomplished but our company does not rest on its laurels. We continue to grow and provide work for some of the most qualified and accomplished electricans in the industry. Our company is very much a close knit group. Larry's fiance, Justina Perez is CFO of the company. She has managed the office for the last decade and navigated the challenges of beaurocracy admirably in that time. William Parks, a former apprentice who worked alongside Lawrence in "the early years" is now a Master Electrician and quite accomplished in his own right. Hamilton Dixon, a sometime coworker and long time friend of the family now manages the Shop and keeps everyone rolling with his humor, wisdom, and mechanical expertise. Southern Lights has now been joined by Lawrence's son, Brian Bonfonti, who aids Tina with day to day operations. In addition, Michael Parks, nephew to William Parks, and Aaron Perez, Tina's son, both serve as apprentice electricians, assuring the legacy of the company is in good hands.

There are two bedrooms on the level floor and they were the ones that were done next. Fortunately these two rooms went much faster and were completed in two weeks, but also were lacking the insulation on the outside walls. The really good news was that since they were quickly redone, and did not cost as much as we thought, we were able to do the living room and dining room in that same year.

One thing about home renovation is that you never know what you are going to run into.  As we were in the middle of the living room home renovation, we came to the front door that we were planning on replacing. As I pulled the old frame out, a bible fell out of the top, apparently that was resting on top of the frame. Let’s just say after the living room home renovation, it is still in the wall.

The thing about the living and dining room home renovation was that both rooms previously did not have over head lights. Now after the living and dining room home renovation we are very pleased to be able to switch on a light switch instead of a lamp. Not only that, but after the second year home renovation, we saved $120 a month on our utilities. The next home renovation is the kitchen.

The upstairs had these long closets that where wasting a ton of space that could be available if the wall was knocked out during the home renovation. I then designed the “new look”, the upstairs would have. After deciding how it would look I had to construct 5 different walls to accomplish my designed of the home renovation.

During the upstairs home renovation we spent only six thousand dollars on materials. It took 32 days to complete. I forgot to mention that some of the upstairs walls where cardboard with no insulation behind them. This let us know that the next home renovation on the regular floor would probably need insulation as well.

The plan was to get the upstairs done to move in and then we would do, home renovation on the rest of the house room by room. We decided we would use our tax return each year to do more work. Next year when we received the tax refund we started the home renovation part two.
